RUBBER TO METAL BONDED COMPONENTS – CRITICAL TO SEVERAL INDUSTRIES

Rubber to metal bonding or adhesion is a very common practice in several industries since such processes are required for various applications. Be it for sticking silicone parts or rubber parts to hard or very hard metal parts, the adhesion processes used in rubber to metal bonding is same but with varying levels of adhesion. Rubber to metal bonded products are especially prevalent in the automotive and engineering industries, wherein such processes help to insulate noise and offer protection to the components. There are essentially three components of any rubber to metal bonding.

  • Rubber
  • Bonding agents
  • Substrate

In certain components, adhesion is required only for assembly purposes whereas others require very close controls. The levels of adhesion required for any rubber to metal bonded component depends upon the following factors:

  • Type of application intended
  • Types of metal
  • Preparation of surface
  • The number and types of nonmetallic inserts
  • Conditions of curing
  • Type of adhesive used

The processes of rubber to metal bonding generally include:

  • Preparation of the surface to be bonded by cleaning it thoroughly
  • Preparation of inserts by methods of blasting or degreasing
  • Vulcanization of the prepared inserts for obtaining the desired adhesion

More commonly, adhesive cements are used for rubber to metal bonding. The adhesives used for such bonding are either solvent based or water based. Solvent based adhesives are low on hazardous air pollutants. It is important that the adhesive for each of the applications be chosen keeping in mind the rubber materials and the metals used in the process. It is also to be remembered that the adhesive chosen should be able to withstand the potential use and wear and tear of the components that are to be bonded. Adhesives are available both in single coat and double coat system, each catering to specific needs. Two coat systems are generally used in instances wherein the component is used in harsh conditions.
